A machine which manufactures ice needs to be run for 10 minutes warm up before the production of ice begins. The mass, in tonnes, of ice produced is directly proportional to the number of hours of production. Given that 20 tonnes of ice are produced when the machine runs for half an hour, find the mass of ice manufactured when the machine runs for 1.75 hours.

20 tonnes of ice ---- 20 minutes = 1/3 hour
x tonnes of ice ------ 1.75 hours - 1/6 hours = 19/12 hours
It states that the mass in tonnes of ice produced by the machine is directly proportional to the number of hours of production, hence
20/x = (1/3) / (19/12)
20/x = 12/57
x =( 20×57) / 12 = = 95
So the mass of ice produced within 1.75 hours by the machine is 95 tonnes of ice
